The Time Zone Series:

Southern Pacific Daylight Special Action Car

SP Daylight Special Action Car

THE STORY OF STANDARD TIME

In the early 1800's each town had its own local time. High noon was the standard that the town's clocks would be set at. The railroads had to know the time of each town on their run to accommodate these time differences of in minutes. To eliminate the time confusion, in 1883, a group known as the General Railroad Time Convention sponsored the use of standard time. They put this system into effect on a national basis, including Canada and Mexico. Congress --35 years later– approved the plan that the railroads already had in operation.

The time zones have been established by the railroads for over 115 years. It is now time for Uncle Herb to visit the Pacific Time zone. The CHICAGOLAND LIONEL RAILROAD CLUB is sending Uncle Herb in the Southern Pacific Daylight Special action boxcar. This is our second car of a four-car collection being completed in the next two years.

The Southern Pacific Daylight Special car carries the colorful Daylight orange & red orange colors. The special Daylight herald is orange with its silhouetted wings of the sky, behind the silver DAYLIGHT script. There is also the Southern Pacific blue herald, showing its tracks to the setting sun. The car is running on steel sprung trucks and metal chassis. The Uncle Herb action car allows you to deliver his crate when placed over and activated by any UCS track.

The first car in the Time zone series is the Union Pacific Commemorative Golden Spike car, and can still be ordered until April 30, 1999. The remaining two time Zone cars will be presented in 1999 through 2000.
