As many of you know, once again, the Chicagoland Lionel Railroad Club participated in the National Model and Hobby Show. The show was open to the general public on Oct. 4th and 5th 1997. Individuals involved in the hobby industry could attend also on Monday and Tuesday.
The layout set up was completed on Thursday, Oct. 2nd by the following members: Irwin Bross, John Flinn, Wally Dietzen, Bill Reich, Dwight Safter, and Swav Kojro. When the operating hands on modular layout was up, its dimensions were 6 1/2 X 2 or 35 feet by 17 feet. The six members were able to run their trains the remainder of the day.
The following day, members of the club ran their trains all day long! A true train fellowship was taking place.
The public was allowed in to the show on Saturday and Sunday. The following members were present on either or both days: Curt Aigner, Joel Arnier, Romayne Baker and Mr. Baker, Dr. Bonus, Irwin and Nathan Bross, John Chap, Ted Cwik and son, Penny DiBartello and Relatives, Lyle Eimen, Bryan and David Groh, Don Jennings, Peter Jilbert, Bill Keleher, Ted King, Mark Klancic, Charles Klingel, Herb Koch, Mark Lieske, Jeff and David Mills, Jim McPherson, Dan Olech , Robin rosenberg, Walter Sehnert, Martin Simon, Joe Slezinger, John Sugrue, and Rich Thayer. It is evident that the club had good participation assisting the hundreds of children, including many Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, running trains. Not only could they be a train engineer, but they could operate the club accessories. At times, I noticed that the lines for the three operating stations were 5 - 6 children deep. Many could not wait to run Lionel Trains. The log loader, oil drum loader, ice station, sound buttons, and operating saw mill received a work-out!!
On Sunday morning, Penny DiBartello did an excellent job of relating to both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Also Wally Dietzen brought his 1954 Southern Diesel ABA and it ran about 5 to 6 hours after it had been lubricated. Many dealers stopped by to chat and watch the club's layout.
Many thanks are sent from Bill Reich, who organized the show, to Carl Hanke, Charles Klingel, Dan Olech, John Flinn, Al Laseke, Wally Dietzen, Dwight Safter, and Swav Korjo for tearing down and assisting in putting trains and accessories in the appropriate containers.
Over 44 members made the hobby show a big success! Looking over the long list of participant's names, I observed three members stood out, in which they were present all six days, Bill Reich, Dwight Safter, and John Flinn. Thanks again to everyone who helped with the layout set up, run, and tear down because without you, it would not have been possible . The club trains also thank you, as they had a thorough work out!!
